By Ben Kingsley

Birth and death certificates, marriage and divorce licenses as well as criminal records are part of the Minnesota Public Records. These documents are considered as open files which the residents of Minnesota can request whenever it is needed.

These public documents are used separately and serve a unique purpose. Records of birth, death, marriage and divorce are used as reference when conducting genealogy research. However, these documents are used separately for its own purpose. A birth certificate is needed when dealing with some government transactions. Financial related concerns or insurance matters would often call for a copy of a marriage, divorce or death certificates. When one needs to look into the criminal history of another person, the criminal records are used as reference.

Each type of document has information that is unique to itself. A death certificate would contain information about the death of a person while birth certificates would show the opposite. Likewise, marriage records would have information about one's marriage and the divorce certificate would have separation details. Criminal records would show information about the offenses and crimes an individual has been reported for. The personal information of the individual on the file is found on all of the public documents in Minnesota.

In order to get a copy of any of the public documents of Minnesota, one should know that there are guidelines that should be followed. Birth and death, marriage and separation papers have to be requested at the office of the Vital Statistics at the Department of Health. The state office only releases documents from 1900. The local county clerk office can also help in getting the needed document. Fees has to be paid in order to obtain a copy of the document, however, this would not be the same for all types of documents. To make the search easier, one has to provide the basic details of the document being requested.

The Public Safety Department of Minnesota is where the criminal records of the state are archived. The retrieval would also cost a certain fee but that would depend on the type of document requested as well as the method used to obtain it. A fingerprint scan can be done but that would cost a little higher than the usual search. The requesting individual should also provide the basic details of the requested file along with their personal information. Once all of the requirements and guidelines are followed, the retrieval process can be easier.

To avoid the hassle that one needs to go through when requesting for government public records in the state of Minnesota, one can request it through the Internet. This has eliminated the need to go to any office since the request can be done even at the comforts of one's home. Aside from that, the requested information can be obtained in just seconds instead of waiting for hours, days or worse weeks. This is the reason why most of the residents of Minnesota would request the public documents online.
